Alright, I managed to borrow the CD that came with the 7D and I was finally able to view the images I took using the 7D. I will not offer any opinions at this time so we can all discuss the matter of Picture Quality/Noise of the 7D versus the 50D using the same lens: First off the 50D Shots. EXIF is intact and it says: Camera: Canon EOS 50D Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/1000); Aperture: f/5.6; Focal Length: 400 mm; ISO Speed: 1600 Exposure Bias: +1/3 EV; Flash: Off, Did not fire Unprocessed/Cropped/No Sharpening or De-noising, nothing but RAW converted to JPEG using DPP 3.7.1.1: Processed using my usual work-flow with de-noising by PSPX2 (though not substantially): Now for the 7D Image. EXIF intact and it says: Camera: Canon EOS 7D Exposure: 0.002 sec (1/500); Aperture: f/6.3; Focal Length: 400 mm; ISO Speed: 400 Exposure Bias: 0 EV; Flash: Off, Did not fire Again, unprocessed/Cropped/No Sharpening or De-noising, nothing but RAW converted to JPEG using DPP 3.7.1.1: Processed using my usual work-flow with de-noising by PSPX2 (though not substantially): The shots were taken minutes apart. Remember please that we shot this with no intention to compare the two cameras in terms of Picture Quality and Noise Performance, but since Ka Mastah was interested, I am posting these samples here. You can view ALL the details of the shots by looking at the "Properties" in their respective Image Windows at: www.flickr.com/photos/val6425/

Thanks Bobby,
I can't make any comments as well, as the photos were taken with different settings. The 50Ds capture was really sharp with a shutter speed 1/1000 while the 7Ds 1/500 was soft. The different SS gave different results.

Neon, the sharpness may vary a little, but look at the ISO's used :-) Ka Mastah was interested in the noise performance from 200-400 ISO. Luckily, Osawa is used to setting his ISO manually to 400, while I just put mine in Auto most of the time. :-)

Oh ok, Thanks I guess I can say something, the noise of the 50D at ISO 1600 is not that much greater than the ISO 400 noise of the 7D. Would this be due to the cropping ratio of both photos are different?

Okay, but the strange thing is that we ARE seeing noise from the 7D at ISO 400! I was not expecting this at all. Given that the 50D does have more noise, the difference in ISO ( 2 stops) makes the noise signature of the 7D a bit too much, at least in my monitor.
I will look for ISO 400 files in my 50D shots to compare them more evenly. :-)

Hey, I found this one with EXIF: Camera: Canon EOS 50D Exposure: 0.002 sec (1/640); Aperture: f/6.3; Focal Length: 400 mm; ISO Speed: 400 Exposure Bias: 0 EV; Flash: Off, Did not fire Straight conversion using DPP / No De-noising, nothing but cropping. Compare the NOISE that you can see in the lighter area behind the 7D Swallow (it approximates the lighter shades in the Sparrow shot). See the difference?

Bobby, Now, definitely the noise on ISO 400 of the 7D is unacceptable, surely the 40D has lower noise at the same ISO. Is the crop ratio the same for both? The smaller you crop the more prominent the noise will be.

I Googled the web to find some support of my findings that the 7D seems to be noisier than the 50D, and guess what: www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Canon_EOS_7D/noise_JPEG.shtmlSurprise, surprise. They claim it's only on the JPEG output, but I think it's also visible in the RAW files. :-) Neon - the Sparrow crop is even more than that of the Swallows. Which makes it even more ridiculous. :-)

Toni Cuesta of Canon just called, a production 7D is now available for me to pick up and test, will give it a good spin in the next few days. Thanks to Bong for helping coordinate this.

@ Romy .........Can't wait ..... Hope it's positive. Can't afford the 1Dmk4 for birding body. 7D is more practical.
@ Bobby ............ Big help and great field review on 7D.
