Hello. When I was little (a long time ago) we had an intelligent talking parrot in the house. His name was Pikoy. He was allowed to fly in the house and every morning, we taught him words while inside a banga (earthen jar). He was with us for about three years before he died of LBM after the maid fed him with butter.
During my elementary days, I also remember participating in a bunot (drawing of lots) outside the public school, the cost of which was the price of a sisiw (chick) or duckling. Needless to say, I usually went home carrying one. I tried to nurse the poor creatures, but never really got to understand why they did not last long.
We did have a hen that successfully raised a chick. Unfortunately, Pretty died after our captive monkey pulled and bit her thin leg.
I know in my heart that if my parents were educated enough about birds, we would not have kept these poor creatures in the house, knowing that they are better left in the wild. If I had seen pictures of these animals in their habitat, these would have impressed upon my young mind the truth that they are meant to be free.
My name is Norman and I shoot mostly fish and landscapes, and dabble with bulb photography when I have the time. I hope to add birds to my list of favorite subjects soon, and based on the beautiful photos I have seen on this forum, I have a feeling that won't be long.
Regards, Norman P. Aquino

Welcome to the board Norman.
Yes, we have stories to tell and am so glad to hear yours. Hopefully with our photos we can convince larger audience to consider birdwatching or bird photography as alternatives.
Regards,
Nilo
