Took these shots with my trusty and simple Canon Powershot... Had to go pretty close too. A Wragler's Pit Viper in Mt. Malipunyo. This one was from our garden. I was looking out for birds when I heard this chirping. Went to investigate thinking it was a young bird instead found a tree snake and a tree frog. It's these times when you wished you had a better camera.

Awesome shots! Even if not as sharp as the first, the second one is more amazing to me - great timing!

Wow... you're also a snake charmer...er ... shooter, Drew... nice shots of what I understand to be a very venomous species! Ok, let me dig up a photo of what I think is a King Cobra that almost bit me at Mt. Makiling.... ....yes, here it is, about 2m in total length: Romy

they are my first love! hehehe thanks Romy, yup they are highly venomous.
Im guessing that, what you shot in Makiling was a Brown Rat snake. These guys are sometimes mistaken for a Philippine cobra because of its coloration and sometimes size, while they are a non venomous species these guys can be aggressive, Trust me. hehehehe
splendid shots btw! as always.

Hmmm.... and I always had this romantic notion that I narrowly missed certain death from a cobra bite during that Makiling sortie...

Very nice captures in all. Yes, snakes are a fact of life in bird and wildlife photography. I've seen em so many times, some are poisonous, some are not. After a successful sortie at the Orlando Wetlands this summer, I saw this Water Mocasin, a very aggressive and venomous snake, crossing my path. Take a look !!!

You deserve a medal of valor for going low angle with a "mere" 560 mm on this menacing creature, Reyno.... great shot! I'll probably do that too, but I'll stack two 2x TCs on the Sigmonster and be happy with a heavily cropped shot from half a kilometer away... ;D ;D Romy
