I had tried to bird at the shores of the La Mesa reservoir before but on the southwest side where the busy treatment plant and offices are so didn't find anything special worth returning to.
But this morning, I went with a team from my office to explore some possible project sites and entered the watershed from the southeast end. As we trekked through the trail, I twice saw a Ruddy Kingfisher. It even stayed on a branch in full view for a few minutes. If I had my gear, then, it would've definitely been a full-frame keeper.
Further into the deep woods, I heard a lot of unfamiliar chirps and a number of birds flit across our path. Didn't have time to stalk as we were there to work. Lots of woodpeckers.
On the lake edge, there were several barn swallows that one could get close to for near full-frame shots. Egrets on the edge across. An osprey flew real close by.
I guess, because the place is protected by Bantay Kalikasan, birds are not very shy.
Will go back there weekend after next (I hope) and will report. If worth it, will see if a team of ours can go on a birding trip.

i can very much relate ding. i oftentimes go to sites where i most often have the wide-angle lens fitted (or similar with you, no camera in hand) and in-between get some real "stare-in-your-face"-"aaaarghhhh" moments with our feathered friends. but that really sounds great. hoping we hear more good news from you.

Guys, I just talked to Mr. John Balayon, the Operations Manager of Bantay Kalikasan. We are going to meet next week to discuss and plan for a bird watching/photography trip for us. I guess they're willing to host us in this endeavor with the possiblity of having it officially covered by the News & Current Affairs Group of Abs-cbn. As Rey had suggested, this can be an organized EB for the group.
You can PM me your suggestions on this matter. I'll keep you posted.

Ding, this seems to be the place where I was asked by Bantay Kalikasan to photo-document the birds over a couple of years ago. I seem to remember to have already met John B. two years ago. Perhaps we can ask BK to give us multiple-access passes. ;D On the media coverage, I suggest we do a series of serious bird shooting, in small groups, and get good photos first. Tough to get rarities when we'll go there in a large group, including friends from News & Current Affairs Group . When the keepers are in the bag, we can have a fun day where the NCAG can document us at work.

That's what I'm telling Bong awhile ago, let's get ahead of the game so we'll have the goodies to deliver without pressure. Then we'll just enjoy the mileage from the news coverage.

Thanks for your inputs guys. I think that's the best approach that I can recommend to BK when I meet them next week. As far as the coverage is concerned, it just cropped up when I mentioned to him that the Bird Season Exhibit had already three TV coverages from the other networks. For now, I will just concentrate on getting the permission to shoot inside the watershed that BK has full control. We might have to explore other places within the area since access to where Ding sighted the birds will be restricted because it is within the jurisdiction of his employer. Let's just take it from there guys. But I'm happy that the news about the sightings really made BK excited and this will give us another opportunity to enjoy and hone our craft.

This place is a Pitta & Thrush country, you just have to be patient and stay very still in one particular place at a time. Lets go back and do some Pitta and Thrush hunt. Are these birds attracted to recordings?
