Just want to share the bird images I captured while on vacation last week. I'll be posting them as soon as I processed the images. As always, comments and critiques are welcome. So let's start with a BIF of a common species. Ring-Billed GullLarus DelawarensisNot a photo-lifer, but I think one of the better ones I've taken so far. Taken from the Incline Village (Nevada side) at the north shore of the lake. Nikon D300, 300mm f/4 + TC 1.4 (420mm), 1/1250s, F/8, ISO 320, handheld

Red-Tailed HawkButeo JamaicensisA photo-lifer for me. Taken from the meadow somewhere in Kahle Drive, Stateline Nevada. Hhhmmm, I think all the birds I'll be posting are from the Nevada side of the lake. Though we stayed in the California side, didn't do any serious birding over there (I have some, but not good). Nikon D300, 300mm f/4 + TC 1.4 (420mm), 1/500s, F/8, ISO 360, handheld, cropped heavily I've been chasing this bird a few days ago but not successful at it. I'm shooting some perched finches when I suddenly saw this hawk hovering over-head. I can't pass the opportunity so I started shooting with the D300 and lens mounted on the 393. I had problems using the gimbal as it's almost at the zenith. I un-mounted the combo and started tracking the bird better ... but I still forgot to change my settings! Ggggrrr!

Black PhoebeSayornis NigricansRecently, I posted a Black Phoebe I've taken from Sacramento. But this one from lake tahoe has a better post. Most likely, this one is a juvenile. Nikon D300, 300mm f/4 + TC 1.4 (420mm), 1/500s, F/8, ISO 200, tripod mounted (190CXpro3 + 393)

Steller's JayCyanocitta StelleriNot a photo-lifer, but the first one I processed. So far, I like this the best. From the nature trail in Sand Harbor beach, north shore lake tahoe. Nikon D300, 300mm f/4 + TC 1.4 (420mm), 1/640s, F/11, ISO 800, supported by a fence post

Excellent Ted! I like the trailing edge of the Gull's wings. Thanks for sharing

Thanks Nilo. I'm not actually happy with the sortie, as my position was not ideal, and I got lots of blurred or OOF images. I'm lucky I got that one that I liked too. Here's another one, from the meadow down at the south shore. Red-Winged Blackbird (male)Agelaius PhoeniceusAgain, not a lifer, but a better one. Tough situation though, wrong position in relation to the morning sun. I wish I can move to a better shooting area, but the area was fenced. Don't want to cross it as I might get fined if caught. The marsh is protected, as they are trying to revive the area with native vegetation. Nikon D300, 300mm f/4 + TC 1.4 (420mm), 1/500s, F/8, ISO 200, tripod mounted (190CXpro3 + 393), raw capture (wow, pardon the sensor dust, didn't try to PP this with CS2)

White-Crowned Sparrow (immature)Zonotrichia LeucophrysNot sure what race this is. Not perfect, but I like the framing. Shot this through a shrub. Same place, south shore area at the edge of a pond by the meadows. Nikon D300, 300mm f/4 + TC 1.4 (420mm), 1/500s, F/8, ISO 500, tripod mounted (190CXpro3 + 393), raw capture

Just for fun ... Lesser Goldfinch (male, molting)Carduelis PsaltriaI thought I got an American Goldfinch, which could have been a lifer. But closer inspection of him and his mate (another capture) made him a lesser goldfinch. This guy perched to a vegetation near the trail I'm walking on. Almost full frame, just cropped the sides, then resized. Overcast, so I got even illumination. Nikon D300, 300mm f/4 + TC 1.4 (420mm), 1/400s, F/8, ISO 560, tripod mounted (190CXpro3 + 393), raw capture

Very nice series Ted. You've captured some beautiful images. This is the one that I like best, composition and feather details are very good, though the Gull in-flight is also a very nice capture.

Thanks Rey. One of the very first bird I captured is the red-winged blackbird. I rented a lens and doing practice shots during lunch break, I thought it's just an ordinary Brewer's blackbird. When I'm reviewing the images I captured, I noticed I got a red-winged! Been chasing these birds ever since, but no luck. Since I don't have enough reach with my lens, I need to get closer, they're very skittish. But if you ignore them, they can get close to you ... I don't get it. Here's another one from Lake Tahoe, near a beach. Common MerganserMergus MerganserThis is a photo-lifer. I'm waiting for them to get to the water, but I got impatient. When I returned, they're gone except for a sleeping pair. Nikon D300, 300mm f/4 + TC 1.4 (420mm), 1/640s, F/11, ISO 640, handheld, raw capture Not sure why my settings are like that, can't remember. I might have accidentally turned the main control dial.

Canada GooseBranta CanadensisBeen drooling to get some BIF of these geese ... but I weren't successful that time. So I have to settle for these (I have better ones). Nikon D300, 300mm f/4 + TC 1.4 (420mm), 1/400s, F/8, ISO 200, tripod mounted (190CXpro3 + 393), raw capture

Western BlueBirdSialia MexicanaPosting just for posterity. Been trying to get better and closer captures of these pretty birds, maybe next time around. Gheee, I need better glass very badly, and soon! Nikon D300, 300mm f/4 + TC 1.4 (420mm), 1/500s, F/9, ISO 640, tripod mounted (190CXpro3 + 393), raw capture Nikon D300, 300mm f/4 + TC 1.4 (420mm), 1/500s, F/9, ISO 450, tripod mounted (190CXpro3 + 393), raw capture I wish I stepped up more on the aperture to get better BG separation on that one.
