Just a clarification, Ivan. My interpretation of the specs is: 1. 648 pixels width (9" @ 72 dpi) for the preliminary submittals 2. 1800 pixels width (6" @ 300 dpi) for final submittals. Questions:1. Those dimensions seem to apply to a landscape composition. Are portrait compositions acceptable? If so, what are the specified sizes? 2. Do you have a specified aspect ratio (width x length) of the photos? Common aspect ratios are: 2:3 - Ex. 8"x12" 3:4 - Ex. 12" x 16" 4:5 - Ex. 8" x 10" 3. Can a photographer submit more than one photo per species? To all certified birdnuts, this is your chance to get published with pay. Go go go, Spartans! ;D

Master!
For the prelims, we chose that size for easier pc loading and it seems to work for projected images that the selection panel will view.
For the final submittal: The measurements will apply even to portrait oriented images. It's meant to give leeway to the graphic designer if he so chooses to make a full-bleed portrait shot for 1 page. In reality, he will most probably down-res when he lays them out because he will use more than 1 image per page. The book size is about 5" x 8".
If the image is not fully framed on the bird, or if he feels that cropping will improve the image, the designer may choose to crop in or not. I guess dimensions are less important than the orientation of the bird in the frame. He is to be given leeway re page composition, so it is even possible that the aspect ratio will become a square. We can trust him to do a good job, he's Robert Alejandro, also of WBCP and National Book Awardee for design several times over.
Everyone can submit several photos of a species. They are preparing the bird list per site, which we will hopefully post by today. The commonly photographed birds are definitely needed, so you can already start prepping those.
Ahu!

;DFunny guys, but the 9 inch (prelim) width spec applies to both horizontally and vertically oriented shots, so your portrait size will be bigger file than a horizontal one by proportion. Also please send upright images already because the panel might not take the time to rotate your shots and misjudge it. The judging will be done via lcd screen and projector so hi-res is not really needed yet.

THE FIRST LIST ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dear Bird Photographers Please submit your bird photos based on the lists given below. Sorry, I'm a little thick. What does the "based on the lists given below mean?" Does it refer to a specific order of the files within the CD? Or simply a list of birds that may be submitted?
|
|
|
Post by Ivan Sarenas on Aug 8, 2008 4:48:23 GMT
Let me downplay your "thickness" by admitting that this is all rush and I expect it to be a nightmare when the panel does the viewing. If you guys can suggest a workflow, maybe that'l help also.
My idea is to have a central list of species from which folders will be created to pool the selections. From there, the final selection will be done. So to answer your question, I assume that it's a list and not a strict rule of order.
And because the budget is limited in proportion to the list given out, some wise choices have to be done with which images get to final inclusion. Its a balancing act between funds and images that the project can afford.
