The first day I went to Mambukal with Boymac & Marester we were able to take pictures of the White-throated Kingfisher from a distance. Not contented with that I made a return trip to Mambukal after two days. It was worthwhile going back because it gave me the opportunity to see
and photograph the endemic Visayan Flowerpecker which was a lifer for me. It also gave me the chance for a second meeting with the White-throated Kingfisher. This time I did not go down from the car and just rolled down the window to take his picture so it did not scare him away unlike the first time. It is not often that you get a second chance like this when it comes to birding and I am thankful for that.
Canon EOS 1D Mark IV, Canon EF 800mm f5.6L IS USM, Gitzo GT3530LS tripod, Wimberley WH200 head. Manual exposure in available light.
The first bird of the day was the Philippine Bulbul (Hypsipetes philippinus) which is endemic to the Philippines. This West Visayan version is now called Steere's Bulbul.

This bird alone, the Visayan Flowerpecker (Dicaeum haematostictum) is worth the trip to Mambukal. It is similar to the Red-keeled Flowerpecker but the red on the chest is bigger and surrounded with black feathers on its chest. It is a happy chirping bird as it comes to feast on the bignay fruits on a nearby tree.

The White-bellied Munia (Lonchura leucogastra) seems to look different from the ones that I see in Luzon. It was a nice bird to photograph even if at a distance, while waiting for the White-throated Kingfisher.

I saw several Sunbirds feeding on the top most part of the African Tulip Tree. It was far and almost 90 degrees angle. I decided to give it a try even if it was backlighted. To my surprise it turned out to be the Crimson Sunbird (Aethopyga siparaja).

Ever since the White-throated Kingfisher (Halcyon gularis) has been recognized as endemic to the Philippines I have wanted to take a picture of this bird. This is the best birding trip I had for this year.
