It is my fifth time in trying to get a good picture of the Indigo-banded Kingfisher (Alcedo cyanopectus), a Philippine endemic. It is not easy as it is more often perch in the dark and covered with branches and leaves. This is the first time for me to see what looks like a fledgeling on the trunk of a fallen tree and with the sun shining. But luck would have it that its back is turned to me. The back of the wings are still brown in color. If this is a young bird, congratulations to our birdwoman Mela for the new addition. To those that have been successful in getting a good photo of this bird, I salute you. To me it is one of the most beautiful bird that we can all be proud of. Canon EOS 1D Mark IV, Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM with Canon Extender 2X II. Gitzo GT3530LS tripod, Wimberley WH200 head. Manual exposure in available light. ISO 3200, 1/160 second, f/5.6 ISO 400, 1/400 second, f/8 ISO 1600, 1/50 second, f/5.6 ISO 1600, 1/50 second, f/5.6

Superb detail, Ely!
Yes, Villa Escudero's IBKFs are the most approachable of this species I've seen so far. Even then, getting close to the tiny bird is still tough.

I like the 4th shot Ely, the 2nd one, too. telyd Thank you Lyds. The second picture was well lighted. The fourth one had nature working for me. With the sun hitting the running water the reflection was hitting the bird on and off.

Beautiful captures of a beautiful bird! I can see from the photos how difficult it must be to capture this bird in good light. Still, those images are really nice. :-)

Very well captured images of this bird Ely! I have spotted some of them in San Mateo area, also underneath low shaded areas by a creek, but had difficulty getting a closer... you did well!

I really admire your going to Villa Escudero 5 times to get one bird. Way to go Ely! It wont be long before you end up with a IBKF macro like Romy.
It looks like it was dark again in that place except for the one shot. Good set Ely.

Even a clear shot like that one of Sylvia on the IBKF with the crab would be a satisfaction for me. I have requested Mela to renovate the flow. Don't be surprise to see me there for the 6th time when the time comes.
