Wild Birds of the Philippines
There are about 614 species of Philippine birds, and 194 of these are endemic to our islands. Over 10% of these species are globally threatened.

By imaging these magnificent winged creatures in their natural habitat and sharing the pictures and footages through the web, we hope that in our own little way we can help raise awareness for the protection of their habitat.

We wish that the children of our children will still be able to behold their beauty long after our generation is gone.

Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM APO (all mounts)
« Thread Started on Aug 27, 2009, 6:56am »

Features:

This Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM APO Lens is an ultra telephoto zoom lens ideal for nature, wildlife, or sports photography. This zoom range translates into an equivalent range of 240-800mm when used with a Canon digital SLR camera.

The OS (Optical Stabilizer) system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed 3-4 stops faster. This allows handheld telephoto zoom shooting even in poorly lit conditions.

The use of the OS (Optical Stabilizer) system, HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), APO apochromatic design, three elements of SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass, and multicoated optics all enable this lens to provide a high level of performance throughout its entire zoom range, as well as versatility. A rear focus system insures quick, convenient manual focus and a non-rotating front barrel.

The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. This lens is specially coated to get the best color balance, while cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. The lens provides the utmost correction against lateral chromatic aberration, which is a serious problem for digital SLR cameras.

By adding the optional Sigma APO teleconverter, you can use this lens as a 210-700mm f/7-9 manual focus ultra-telephoto zoom lens with a 1.4X EX teleconverter, or as a 300-1000mm f/10-13 manual focus ultra-telephoto zoom lens with a 2X teleconverter.

• The OS system uses two sensors inside the lens to detect vertical and horizontal movement of the camera. It works by moving an optical image stabilizing lens group, to effectively compensate for camera shake. It automatically detects movement of the camera and compensates for camera shake when shooting moving subject such as motor sports.
• The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) system ensures quiet and high-speed auto focusing with full time manual focus override.
• Three Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements provide excellent correction for chromatic aberration.
• Super Multi Layer (SML) coating reduces ghost and flare.

This is my first serious birding lens. I have the Nikon mount and I have used it on the D300 and D90 for about a year. I have sold it to another bird nut and hoping he is enjoying the lens and have moved on to the Canon system to further my growth in bird photography.

It is one great lens at this price range and it has produced some really good bird images. It was even better at sports and long candid shots. I bought it at P47,500 and at this price range, one can really shoot long.

Here are the positives for birding:

(1) It is very light and very handholdable for my built.

(2) AF is quite fast. I rarely do get out-of-focus BIF shots when mounted on my D300. On a D90, things are a bit unpredictable but it is still quite good. I guess it has to do with D90's AF system which is a lot less better than the D300.

(3) IQ is better when this lens is mounted on my D90 than my D300. So I guess I can attribute this fact to the camera and not with the lens.

(4) Optical stabilization on this lens really works.

(5) It's size is manageable. I can shove it on one of the camera compartments of a Tamrac 10X Velocity sling bag with its tripod collar on and my D300 mounted.

(6) It has always attracted attention from anyone who happens to pass by.

(7) built is quite good and sturdy.

(8) I have tried mounting it on a non-reporting Kenko 1.4x teleconverter and it still autofocuses. AF is decent when lighting condition is friendlier, it hunts a bit on low light but it still does AF.

Here are the quirks that I encountered:

(1) Sharpness is pretty inconsistent with this lens as it is generally soft at wide open and zoomed to 500mm. I do get sharp images though but I have to stop down to f8. I have tried calibration on the D300 but there is a lot to be desired on the consistency of its sharpness.

(2) OS is a bit noisy but I have been used to it.

(3) Lens creep is a bit annoying but manageable. When out there in the field I put a garter with velcro so it stays @ 450mm or 500mm all the time.

If I have to pick one photo that was captured by this lens among my bird shots, here is the best and my favorite.
