Hi! Please help id this bird. The photo was taken in Coron, Palawan on August 14. I only saw this bird very briefly, and this is the best shot I have of it. Thanks! Sylvia

Wow.... an exotic looking bird, looks like a tough ID case to crack, I suggest you post it at WBCP too, Sylvia.

Hi Sylvia, Do you have a photo showing the bill or portion of it?
Thanks.

Ok, I posted it in WBCP .. no reply yet. Nilo -- I took just 3 pics, and they all look like this! I find the tail so interesting though.

Wow!! This looks like a bird that's not int the books!! But it could be a White-Vented Shama with it's tail just growing back after a molt. The stance is that of a WVS. But it could be something else since you did not capture a whole bird to give a definitive ID.

Hi guys. I think the bird is blue with reddish eyes. I can't find it in the book.

If the bird is blue with reddish eyes, then this could be the Asian Fairy Bluebird (Irena puella).

Will need to meditate a while on this. Just a point of information, are we on Busuanga, or are we on Palawan. It matters.
A note to myself: (dark passeriformes range possibles)
Coracina striata difficilis - no, body not chunky enough Dicrurus hottentottus palawanensis - no, tail doesn't grow out like this Irena puella tweeddalei - no Corvus enca pusillus - no Copsychus niger - most likely, tail growing in on an immature/subadult Aplonis panayensis panayensis - no Gracula religiosa palawanensis -no
So, yes, I do agree with Ivan that Copsychus niger is the probable ID.

I'd go for WVS based on tail length alone. The adult Asian Fairy Blues I've seen have proportionally shorter tails. Also the base of the bill is not as chunky as that of the Bluebirds. Another clue could be that the blues in an AFB are unmistakably radiant unlike here where it seems to be a glossy blue-black. My amateur opinion anyway
